We will update this page as we develop efforts to elevate and fund-raise in support of fandomers, because fandom is our fandom.

Thank you for continuing to visit our site, participate in the fandom that has long belonged to all of us, and help us work to realize the vision of this truly inclusive fandom. Things are pretty quiet at FictionAlley these days, since we moved in with Archive of Our Own about two years ago. Speaking personally as Heidi for a moment, I've had a very long and complicated 18 months of family losses, and I know many of you have, too.

But in these past two weeks, we should have at least made a few things clear and prominent on the front page, so please accept my personal apologies for not having done so beforehand.

Regarding Black Lives Matter and the murder of George Floyd, as well as the attacks on protesters and the murders of Black men and women including Ahmed Arbury and Brionna Taylor, we recommend the resources shared by Healing Fictions, founded by one of FictionAlley's founding mods, Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas of the University of Pennsylvania.

And here's a reading list curated by our friends at Sirens, and from the NY Times, of books regarding anti-racism, and by women, nonbinary, and trans folks writing SFF works about Black people and Black communities. Regarding the tweets this past weekend by A Certain Writer, we categorically disagree with her statements, and stand with Arthur Levine, US publisher of the Harry Potter series, as well as Daniel Radcliffe, Noma Dumezweni and many others. If you haven't read what Daniel published via The Trevor Project, we strongly recommend that you do (follow the link above or read the screenshots below). Daniel speaks for us.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred.

As author Robin Stevens said, "When we write for children we become part of their lives, in positions of authority. For a children’s author to turn around and publicly deny the humanity of some of the children they write for is not merely cruel, it is a dereliction of duty. It is unprofessional."

Many of us who came to Harry Potter as tweens, as teens or as 20somethings (as well as those who first read the books at older ages) have lived the impact of those stores for years, decades, even 20 years as it is for me, marking 20 years in the fandom this very month. The fandom is here for all of us, if we want to remain a part of it. We are not obligated to pay any attention to her, but we cannot be silent about the hurt that she has caused, or the ignorance that she has disseminated. Stay safe, Happy Pride, and remember that we love you.

For more Harry Potter "Things That Have Nothing To Do With" Joanne, here's a great list of links which we found via our friend Jackson Bird, whose memoir, Sorted, we enthusiastically recommend.

We hope to see you soon.

Always,
Forums/Park posts, blogposts, tutorials and pre-2006 essays will stay at FictionAlley.org.
Open Doors will be working with FictionAlley team to import FictionAlley into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all fanfiction, fanart and HPInkPot essays currently on FictionAlley will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages. Eventually, redirects will be set up from the original archive to the AO3 collection.

We will begin importing works from FictionAlley to the AO3 after August.

We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.
All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. No less than 1 month after the import has completed, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors. Open Doors will then set up the redirects.
Please contact Open Doors with your FictionAlley pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive

You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.

You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).

You would NOT like your works moved to the AO3.

You are happy for us to preserve your works on the AO3, but would like us to remove your name.

You have any other questions we can help you with.

The DNS is propagating so it may take a few more hours until the Park is fully back up. Please let us know via a comment here or email help@fictionalley.org if anything is still not working mid-afternoon today.
http://www.fictionalley.org - Where creativity is magic!
Heidi8http://www.blogger.com/profile/00204251779312051075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7247725097748611036.post-13945588701047537602016-11-29T07:57:00.001-08:002016-11-30T06:49:26.870-08:00ARCHIVED: What happened? Was it Voldemort? Grindlewald? No, it was a crash of the FictionAlley motherboard.

It happens, and it's nobody's fault, not really. It crashed yesterday morning (EST on Nov. 28) and it's taking a while for it to come back online. First they tried to reboot it, then they realized the motherboard was ruined, and they've been working to put our hard drive onto a new server.

We don't expect that any content was lost but when it comes back online, we'll check. It's possible a few Park posts may have gone missing, and we know there were awesome conversations taking place then and we hope you can resume the magic when the site is back online.

None of the links on the right work now. But they will again, soon!

More info as we have it....

The good news is, our site host is giving us December for free - which is important because we had plans to ask you for money today, which is #GivingTuesday.

Our hosting and domain name fees are about $2500 per year; the site mods have been paying more than half of these costs for the last few years, and we bring in a few hundred dollars every year via Google Ad revenue and from people making purchases via our Amazon urls, but we need your support. If you are able to donate ten dollars, twenty dollars, or even fifty dollars or more, it would make a huge impact on FictionAlley's annual costs.

FA founder Heidi8 will double the first eight donations, as well as all donations on December 8, 2016. Also, if we raise $4000 (to cover the next 18 months of costs/fees) by February 28, 2017, all other donations in 2017 will go to hiring a programmer to rebuild FA's hosting system and forums.
In honor of the forthcoming release of Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them (Pt. 1), we're reverting to our Wizarding World of the 1920s theme, thanks to lovely artistry from Starling and Priscilla. We're time traveling through over twelve years of fandom, and about 90 years of history, to recapture the fashionable shine of decades past.
(And weren't they prescient? As good at predicting the future and the past as Professor Trelawney!)
http://www.fictionalley.org - Where creativity is magic!
Heidi8http://www.blogger.com/profile/00204251779312051075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7247725097748611036.post-71228748178156248852016-03-08T02:51:00.000-08:002016-04-01T02:56:28.208-07:00Fan Film RecLast summer, FA's Heidi moderated the Harry Potter Fandom panel at San Diego's Comic Con; one of her panelists was Justin Zagri, whose fan film - Severus Snape & the Marauders - is now up on YouTube. Check it out here, because fan creativity in any medium is magic!
Today, we lost our beloved Alan Rickman to cancer, and we raise our wands in his memory.

Our friends at the HP Alliance memorialized him, magically; they speak for us:

"This is what we’re about. The idea that story can change the world is at the heart of what we do and how we do it.

"But before we were building an organization, planning campaigns, or sharing in the power of story and the power of love with a community built on both, we were reading and watching Harry Potter. We were being enchanted by actors like Alan Rickman, who brought our very favorite story to life with incomparable commitment and skill. To think about the films is to think about that inimitable sneer, that drawl nobody can ever unhear.

"Those performances and their impact never faded. In the past month alone, we’ve seen references to Alan Rickman’s Snape in puppet shows and lyrics, from Yule Balls to Draco and the Malfoys’ house show. And in the years before that? Too many good times to count. We don’t think Alan could possibly know exactly how many or exactly how grateful we are.

The truest thing Severus Snape ever said was simple: “It’s real for us.” It all is: the message, the memories, the magic. The best way to move forward is to carry that with us.

"If that first potions scene struck fear - or anger - into your heart, if Alan Rickman’s immaculate portrayal made you feel something, to want to do something, to want to be kinder and to never abuse your power over those in your care and to stick it to the man, that was real. It is real. The power of a community coming together in a time of darkness and creating light is real, too. Don’t lose sight of it. Use it to change the world."

FictionAlley was founded on the belief that creativity is magic; Alan - Professor Rickman - showcased creativity and magic in all he did. Our thoughts are with his family and friends today - and also with all of you. Our grief is real, legitimate and worthy of sharing within our fandom community.

And also, FUCK CANCER.
http://www.fictionalley.org - Where creativity is magic!
Heidi8http://www.blogger.com/profile/00204251779312051075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7247725097748611036.post-63579203639565080372015-12-15T03:04:00.002-08:002015-12-15T03:06:47.703-08:00Return to the Wizarding World

We agree with the idea shared by the HPA this month - We want our community and all others like it to be safe, constructive, positive spaces. - so we've read the guidelines at PositiveFandom; we hope that we've always followed the principles and concepts articulated within those statements, and we know you tell us when we don't.

We know that "fandom is home to endless perspectives on and interpretations of a common material," - that concept is why FictionAlley was founded - and if you're interested in signing onto supporting the guidelines too, that would be magical and awesome.

And if you're going to be at GeekyCon in Orlando on August 1 (the event goes from July 30 to August 2), Heidi will be talking about legal issues involving fandom, fanworks and fandomers - including the importance of terms of use that include principles like those included in the Positive Fandom guidelines; come by and say hi!
http://www.fictionalley.org - Where creativity is magic!
Heidi8http://www.blogger.com/profile/00204251779312051075noreply@blogger.com
