Ascendio's Quill Track

If you're a fan of YA, general book geekery or an aspiring writer (original or fanfiction!), Ascendio has the programming track for you! The Quill Track will be an entire track of programming (both formal and informal!) dedicated to all things books and writing.

Best of all, the Quill Track is 100% included in your Ascendio registration!

Ascendio is the eighth event put on by HPEF, a nonprofit organized by Harry Potter fans to put on amazing, educational and fun events for fans, academics, writers, authors, Quidditch players, debaters, and anyone who loves discussing - or has been inspired by - the Harry Potter series of books and films. HPEF also hosted events like Nimbus - 2003, Azkatraz and Infinitus 2010, and the event is set to take place in Orlando, Florida from July 12 - 15, 2012. Click here for the website.

Currently, several authors, all bonafide Harry Potter fans, are confirmed for the Ascendio Quill Track, including Lev Grossman, Beth Revis, Veronica Roth and Aimee Carter.

We will also have not one, but THREE literary agents who will be in attendance: Carlie Webber of the Jane Rotrosen Agency, Lindsay Ribar of the Sanford J. Greenburger Associates agency, and Joanna Volpe, Vice President of the Nancy Coffey Literary Agency. Carlie, Lindsay and Joanna will all be hosting pitch sessions, as well as leading discussions on the publishing industry and writing.

Here are some of the great things you can look forward to as part of the Ascendio Quill Track:

"Book club" readings/signings/discussions with YA authors, such as Beth Revis, Veronica Roth & Aimee Carter
Panel discussions on hot topics in publishing, including commercial publishing vs. self-publishing, LGBTQ in YA, how to get an agent, and more
Practical presentations by successful fans-turned-published authors on how to go from fanfic to pro writing, as well as how-tos on self-publishing ebooks
Workshops on writing (fanfic and original) and critiquing
The opportunity to give a one page pitch & receive feedback from a real live literary agent!

Of course, Ascendio is still all about Harry Potter, but we realize that many fans -- including many of us on staff! -- love books in general, and have been inspired by Harry Potter and fandom to move on to our own original writing. Hence, the Quill Track was born, by Harry Potter fans, for Harry Potter fans... who also love books and writing! You can expect most, if not all, topics on the Quill Track to relate to Harry Potter, though some will also discuss other titles in YA, middle grade and adult contemporary canon. All of the authors, agents and presenters on the Quill Track are Harry Potter fans, and many of them either wrote Harry Potter fanfic or have actively participated in HP geekery in the past.

The Quill Track is still a part of Formal Programming at Ascendio -- we just decided to give all writing/publishing programming a special name so it’s easy to find on the program and at the con! What does this mean? The Quill Track needs you! You can submit a programming proposal for the Quill Track about any of the above topics, or anything you come up with -- if it has to do with writing (original or fanfiction!), publishing or books other than Harry Potter (such as The Hunger Games, Divergent), you can propose it for the Quill Track!

Not Actually About our Server Fundraiser 2012

We were going to post today about our annual FictionAlley fundraiser, which we're starting this week to cover our server fees for 2012; you can take a peek at our page on FirstGiving if you want to, but we're delaying the official launch until tomorrow so we can talk about other issues that have the potential to impact funding of FictionAlley and fansites like it, as well as many social media, news, fan-discussion, blogging and informational sites.

And you may wonder why we care about an act designed to stop piracy; FictionAlley doesn't allow links to downloads of the Harry Potter books or films!

But the thing is, the "Stop Internet Piracy Act" is written in such a way that it gives any owner of any copyright, trademark right, right of publicity or other intellectual property rights the ability to shut down a site's ability to accept donations made via credit card companies, PayPal or Amazon, or bar a site from hosting Google or Groupon ads or being part of the WBShop or Amazon Affiliate programs just because they think that one icon, one User Profile, one piece of fanart, one fanvid or one fanfic infringes on their content - regardless of whether that story, icon, vid or art is transformative, or created pursuant to fair use.

"Fair use is a lawful use of copyright." That's what the Northern District of California said in Lenz v. Universal Music back in 2008. So much of what we do on FA - from the discussions in the Park to the art and fic and vids we host and link to - is fair use, but there's no Fair Use provision in SOPA.

"Think about this for a second: think how many bogus DMCA takedown notices are sent by copyright holders to take down content they don't like," writes TechDirt's Mike Masnick. "With this new bill, should it become law, those same copyright holders will be able to cut off advertising and payment processing to such sites. Without court review."

If we can't accept donations from FictionAlley's users and visitors, we won't be able to keep the site online; it costs about $3000 per year to cover our servers, domain names and other related expenses, and we appreciate all the help you give us in covering those costs. If SOPA passes, and one copyright-holder who doesn't agree with the law of Fair Use complains to PayPal or Google or Amazon, we may lose the ability to accept donations from users like you.

And we're just a little site in the grand scheme of things. YouTube hosts fanvids, parodies and reviews, Tumblr and LiveJournal host every type of content that can be created, and Google links to everything. One person can choose to abuse the provisions of SOPA and damage each of those sites for everyone - or the sites themselves may curtail certain services, or limit what they allow people to share, discuss and distribute.

That's not an Internet that any of us would recognize.

Flashback to Harry Potter & the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone: The Movie

10 years ago today, Harry Potter & the ~~Sorcerer's~~ Philosopher's Stone was released in movie theaters around the world.

Some FictionAlley users were able to see it ahead of time, because for some reason, the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City sold tickets to the preview to those who were lucky enough to get to the box office window. You can read their reviews, and reviews of dozens of other FictionAlley Park Denizens, here.

A few highlights (with spoilers for the film but does anyone need to warn for that anymore?:

When Hagrid tells Harry "You're the Boy Who...Lived!" Harry just looks poleaxed. Ah well. I suppose anyone would.
Dan Radcliffe has the look, the mannerisms and the charm of Harry down pat. His strongest expresisons are the bemusement that must be inherent at entering a world where science does not rule alone and the bravery that Harry shows to achieve all he does. In a sense, the movie Harry is a more realistic bundle of emotions than the book Harry. However, more is asked of him than any other actor and so there are more occasions where he is required to do the impossible in a single brief shot than for anyone else.
Dan may be sweet and Emma may be Hermione, but Rupert was just incredible. You could scarcely believe the kid has never acted before - if you're anything like me you despair at most child actors - I find Haley Joel Osment particularly irksome, and I cannot watch ET without cringing at Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore as Elliot and Gertie. However, I was getting none of this with Rupert. Sure, he sounded a little too estuarine for a kid who we understand is meant to be a west-country lad, but he had the pick of the lines, and was genuinely superb. The film indubitably belongs to Ron.
Alan Rickman was good as Snape, but we don't get the impression that he really hates Harry.
I was terrified Tom Felton would screw up Draco's character but he managed to pull him off quiet well. Since the intro scene at the robe shop was cut and some of his nastier lines Draco came across as either a horrid spoilt little boy or else an insecure kid. No middle ground. But he's only meant to be *eleven* here so that's okay.

Speaking completely personally, I used to hate the 70+ seconds in the first film where Hedwig is flying across the screen and the seasons change; I thought it was a waste of time that could have been given over to "Nitwit, blubber, oddment, tweak!"
